RE: "Set screw" to reduce slop in hitch receiver?

Been there done that and wasn't happy with the results. It would eventualy scar the receiver and start rattling all over again. I have used this Anti Rattle Devise for three years and love it. That's an interesting device. Does it really help with up/down play? Seems like no matter how much you tightened it, the TT would be able to overcome the friction on the sides of the stinger on anything but a flat smooth road. My problem seems to be up&down movement, rather than side to side. Can it be installed 90 degrees from what is shown, with the bolts perpendicular to the ground?

RE: Too much weight distribution?

Are all bars for different weight classifications solid? If so, how are they any different? To my knowledge they are all solid. The weight capacity difference is in the dimensions and possibly metallurgy. Read at this link about the Equal-i-zer specifications. Look at the spring arm size. Thanks, I guess I never saw that page when I purchased mine. I run the 12,000 pound version on my TT that has a 600lb tongue and 7700 gross and have had no problems at all. I figured that I would have room to grow next time when I trade up. Which, if you ask Equal-I-Zer, is perfectly acceptable using their hitch. I run the 1200 unit on my TT with around 700-800 TW. Just take care not to lift the bars too much.

RE: fdr state park

Y'all are crazy. FDR is a terrible park. No reason at all that anyone would need to come there and fill up a campsite. Just stay home, go to parks near your house. Nothing to see, honest. Callaway is overrated, too, don't bother coming down and filling the place up. Honest. Really. Stay away. /think it'll work?

RE: iron hill campground- allatoona

Red Top is not closed. The old Iron Hill is. It's now the "Iron Hill Trail" and it's a nice walk or bike ride. Drive the main Red Top road south, and you'll find it not too far past the campground entrance. We've done the trail on cruiser bikes, and the more hardcore folks just do multiple laps. I wondered about the old campground. It is neat, and maybe a bit spooky, to see all of the old campsites rotting away. Somebody still uses part of it, because there are bleachers and a big fire pit just about square across the lake from the Yurt in Red Top's campground. Church groups?

RE: Trackrock Campground near Blairsville Georgia

We've camped there in a motorhome, and in our current TT. It's a great park, and not difficult to get to. BUT, you'll want to get there via the I-575 route, which is mostly divided 4-lane until you get rather close. If you go up GA-400 and thru Dahlonega, you're going to run into curvy mountain roads. It's great fun in a Miata, not so much fun pulling a 32' trailer. :) Spacing varies. When you talk to them, tell them what you're looking for. We stay away from the pull-thrus on the top of the hill (57-69), because that's too much like a parking lot. The campground map on their website doesn't really give you a good feel for the sites. We stayed in 76 our first time, and it was a nice site. It's tucked up against a very wooded hillside, and the closest neighbor is actually behind you (off your tail) rather than beside you. Last time we went up kind of last-minute and were in site 89. Not a real large site, and minimal shade, but nice enough. The prettier sites are further back into the campground. We've yet to stay in any of sites 1-50, but many of them are very good sites for shade and space, and we've seen some large motorhomes tucked in there. Others are better for tents or pop-ups. So, like I said, tell them what you're looking for and they'll fix you up.

RE: SOUTHERN REDNECK CAMPING.HAVE YOU BEEN THERE DONE THAT

But, but... When they decide to go camping at the COE on the lake, how do they get the fridge down the steps and into the back of the truck? http://i62.photobucket.com/albums/h115/tcbarney/Fridgeonsite2.jpg http://i62.photobucket.com/albums/h115/tcbarney/Fridgeonsite-1.jpg

RE: Removing frozen bolt, any quick tips....?FIXED!

FWIW, I've found PB Blaster to work much better than Liquid Wrench. You wouldn't think there'd be that much difference in these types of products, but it seems there is.

RE: Shoreline to gen in truck bed while traveling

I did this for my gennie, too, running from my junction box to an outlet at the trailer tongue. I used 10-3 "portable cord" for about $1.50/ft. from my local Home Depot. This is basically the same stuff your shore power cable is made of. Very tough black rubberized outer cover, nice and flexible for bouncing down the road. And it's the perfect size and shape for installing a large weather-proof marine-style outlet or plug on the end, which the Depot also sells.

RE: TT Suspensions

What's the payload capacity of your Dodge? Will allowing 6,000 lbs for the truck leave you enough payload capacity to handle the tongue weight of an 8,000 lb. trailer? On topic, my Maxlite has the leaf-spring suspension. I'm finding that it's bottoming out. I see evidence where the U-bolt is bumping the bottom of the frame. I need to lift mine, apparently. I would prefer something with more wheel travel, and a smoother ride is always better for the "house in a hurricane" that is a TT going down the road.

RE: Equal-i-zer Problem - "L" Piece Stuck (photo)

The bad - not to spec L-Brackets measure 2" from the bend instead of the 1 5/8 inch. If you measure and they are almost 2" - call Progress Mfg! Seems like a longer distance would be better than a shorter distance? Thanks for everyone's help! Remember, this measurement is the placement of the hole, through which the L-pin goes. The shorter distance keeps the top of the pin over the bar, so that it does not slip off. Essentially, you want that distance to be just a little wider than the bar itself. I gotta wonder if they didn't ship a bunch of 1,400 lb. brackets with the lower-capacity hitches. Aren't those bars fatter? I like the way Progress Manu. stands behind their product. I wasn't having problems with mine, but measured them after reading some of these threads, and they sent me the correct L-brackets within a few days.

RE: DURO Tires

Here's what I said in this Duro tire thread. I had Duros on my TT. They did fine for two years, including a marathon trip from Atlanta to Utah and back last August. But this spring, when I came out of storage and started inspecting stuff, I saw some cracking starting on the sidewalls. Having read "on the intarweb" that other folks had the same issues with Duros, I decided to go with a different tire. Decided on Maxxis, we'll see how it goes. I will say this, however: I didn't bother calling Duro or my dealer to complain about the tires. Because I know that I drove them over 70mph at times, and some of those times were in Utah or New Mexico or Florida in August. They've also been subjected to Atlanta-area heat, pollution, (and drought) and they sat from Nov to May without covers on them this past year. So, I take some responsibility for their shortened life, and I'll try to take better care of the Maxxis tires and get more life out of them.

RE: Light Travel Trailer with 2 Slides

R-Vision makes a floorplan like that in their Maxlite line. I have this one, the ML30BHS: http://i62.photobucket.com/albums/h115/tcbarney/Maxlite/e5dcre2.jpg That model's floorplan has recently changed, and they now call it the ML-29BHGS. The kitchen is now aft of the couch and on the slideout with it. Less counter space, more floor space. 5,421 lbs dry weight, 7,449 GVWR. Looks like this: http://i62.photobucket.com/albums/h115/tcbarney/Maxlite/Maxlite29bhgs_2008.jpg We love it. We have 8-1/2 year old twins, and they really enjoy their "bedroom." I pull with a big ole truck, but it's not that heavy, and a 1/2 ton truck could handle it fine. Get a good sway control hitch. Here's the link for the Max-lite trailers: R-Vision Max-lite TTs BTW, one way that R-Vision keeps these light, in addition to the aluminum construction, is their cable-actuated slideout mechanism. No heavy gears and iron beams. It works really well, and is user adjustable without too much trouble.

RE: I-65 stole my beer

Glad y'all got a kick out of this post. A couple of things: 1. I SAID I knew it wasn't real beer. :) 2. Actually, other than that stretch of I-65, admittedly under construction, the Alabama highways weren't too bad. (We drove 85 & 65 this trip, plus US287 and US59 down to Gulf Shores.) The bottles WERE laying on their sides. I'll make a special effort to keep them upright next time. Didn't think about the air pocket. "Highway Robbery" heh. Wish I'd thought of that for my post title.

I-65 stole my beer

Bumpy road. I-65 on the south side of Montgomery, AL. Even at 45mph we were getting jounced around pretty good. When I opened the fridge that night, beer was running out the bottom. One of the bottles was laying on its side and looked like this. I've never known a sealed bottle to leak like this. (That's a Tequiza bottle, btw. I know, it's not real beer. But it's really tasty on a hot afternoon.) http://i62.photobucket.com/albums/h115/tcbarney/P7230699.jpg

RE: Gas V10 gas mileage

I tow with a 5 speed manual, 3.73 rear end. On level ground, I pull my 7,500# TT at about 62mph, rpm are below 2k, probably around 1,800 or so. For moderate hills, I drop into 4th gear, and run the rpm up to around 2,200-2,500 to maintain 60mph or so. Steep hills see 3rd gear, and I'll need the rpm up around 3,500 or higher to make some real power, but then I can accelerate up the hills no problem. I find that if I drive much below 60mph, the truck doesn't like 5th gear because the rpm drops too low. Unless I'm on very flat ground, I need to be in 4th to tow comfortably at 55mph. Even with the automatic, 3,500rpm sounds too high, to me, for towing. You should be making enough power that you could pull pretty comfortably at 2,500 or less, unless you're pulling a decent hill. You shouldn't just slow down and drop rpm when you climb a hill. The transmission should downshift to bring the rpm back up as you attempt to give it more gas. Don't know much at all about auto transmissions, but is it possible that your vacuum leak is affecting that as well? I get around 8.7mpg pretty consistently when towing if I stay around 62mph.

RE: Suggested Campgrounds in Utah and Colorado

We did some of that tour last summer, from Atlanta. (Mesa Verde, Durango, Four Corners, SE Utah.) We stayed at A&A Mesa Verde Campground, just outside the gates. It's a looong slow drive into the park. If you're going to be going in and out while you're there, you may not want to stay at the campground inside. In Utah, I wanted to be close to Blanding (lived there when I was 4 years old) but at little to the north, so we stayed in Monticello at Roughlock. It's somewhat primitive (tho' with full hookups) but we prefer that. Even if you don't stay there, drop in to the "Saloon" for an excellent steak dinner. In Durango we stayed at Lightner Creek. Along the way, we liked Burns Park Campground in North Little Rock, Arkansas, and Santa Rosa Campground in New Mexico. I'd happily stay at any of the above, again. Great trip, wonderful country. Wish I could go back tomorrow. Enjoy!!!

RE: funny DURO tire story

Well, what else ya gonna do? Trust the tire guy down the road who only sells one brand? At least you can gather data, look at trends, and make a decision with some data (as opposed to no data.)
